Thanks to my mom and dad, I am the newest subscriber to Net Flix! Thanks for the fun birthday gift, Mo and Dad! I love it. I'm expecting my first 2 selections tomorrow: The Three Amigos and a X-Files movie (Taylor's request). However, my "queue" ends there. I am suddenly at a total loss...
What should I order? What have you watched that you would recommend?
Carrie and Abby, what was the name of the documentary you loved so much?
Suggestions welcome!

since my memory is horrible you'll have to make do with what we just watched: "the it crowd." it's this bizarre britcom but it's hysterical. but as i don't know you that well, i don't know if you're quirky enough to like it. oh well! that's all i got.
I think the name is 'Grey Gardens'. If you are up for some international themes, one my favorite Japanese movies is 'Twilight Samurai'. My thesis adviser said he thinks everyone should be required to get netfliks and he would make it a requirement for his classes if he could... We still don't get netfliks... Maybe someday when we have a TV without green spots and when I have a real job...
I don't use Netflix but wish I would've created the concept.
PS: Lovely blog, yours. And the time travel concept...are you a fan of the genre? as in "Time traveler's wife" (sweet book I just finished it last week) or the Gabaldon series per chance? Both are amazing time travel books.
I don't have Netflix either...: (
I just finished watching "Everything Is Illuminated" -a really interesting, quirky, funny, and deeply sad movie. How's that for range? About a young Jewish man in search of a piece of his family history. Brilliant.
I loved the documentary Paperclips, as well as Something the Lord Made.
We canceled our cable just so we could do netflix...love it.
BTW. Nice job at the Wasatch back...wish I could have joined you guys. Maybe when my Husband is done with grad school. Does that ever end?
The thing we love about Netflix is that you can get multiple episode discs for shows that you haven't seen/need to catch up on. We did that for 24, Lost, Chuck (highly recommend if you haven't been watching it), and House among others. It's also great if you are like us (and with 4 kids I'm guessing you are) and don't get out to the movies much - so we just mentally jot down what we want to see and then wait 6 months! haha Sadly, there is no Netflix in the UK...boo.
Ha! Funny title!! Um, I'm just like erinmalia--bad memory... but I do enjoy watching cds of TV series. Anyhoo, have fun choosing and viewing!!
I just watched the bbc production of Robin Hood. It was a tv series over there. I really enjoyed it..thougt it was fun. Seasons 1 and 2 are out.
We just watched "Ghost Town"--hilarious! I agree about the series. We watched Dicken's "Bleak House" and it was fascinating but long--several discs long. The "John Adams" series is also excellent. You could get "High School Musical 3" for the Wave! Oh the possibilities are endless!
You may be the last person on earth to join Netflix but I was recently the only person on earth not to have watched Nacho Libre. I finally did it. I laughed so hard I cried. I'm sure you've seen it or own it but that's my recent fav.
The TV series Alias I highly recommend. The first few seasons in particular.
Oh, have you seen Twilight? It's this really cool movie about a girl who falls in love with a vampire...I think it's also a book or something.
Any PBS Masterpiece Theater/Masterpiece Classics. LIttle Dorritt was like 12 hours long and SO good. Arrested Development (TV Series) is my most favorite EVER, but you have to be pretty weird to enjoy it. Something tells me Taylor would be in (that's a compliment).
-The Shower (Japanese)- Funny and tender
-Manon of the Spring (French) -Has a sequel, but can't remember the name.
-Lars and the Real Girl
-Shall We Dance (Japanese)
-Rushmore (we own a clearplay that edits movies, don't know if you do R-rated. We don't really have to worry about it)
-Taken (SciFi Channel mini-series)- Not my thing, but I actually liked it.
-Life as a House
-Martian Child
-The Shipping News
-Henry Poole is Here
-Mystery Men
-Best of SNL series
-Dan in Real Life
-Litttle House on the Prairie series- C'mon, your kids will love it!
That's what I got. I have a few more, but they are r-rated for good reason and I wouldn't recommend them if you can't edit them. Have you heard of Clearplay? It makes a great companion to Netflix.

I recently got a movie from our library that I was a little scared to watch because of the title but really enjoyed. It's not a comedy really or a love story, no action but just a really interesting perstpective. I don't want to tell you more but you may enjoy it. "Lars and the real girl". I really enjoyed the series of Hortaio Hornblower based on the books by Forrester.
Those of us completely addicted to Netflix say WELCOME!! We have used this for YEARS. Came in truly handy when we had only ONE car, or too many kids to actually enjoy wandering and reading the backs of movies. For years we always had our movies in 3's. One for the kids, one for Mom (generally, ended up being kid fun too.) and a Dad flick. At one time, I do believe we had over 30 movies in our que. LOL....it was really funny when we went a week without a new movie and realized we'd gone thru them ALL. It helped us better survive the many months we only had rabbit ears ont he t.v.
(oh, and tell Molly there are plenty of us that still haven't seen Nacho Libre. She's that one up on us. ;o)
Enjoy the movies :o)..
Netflix is my drug. I watch movies while running on my treadmill, sitting in my bed, eating ice-cream on my couch, and the other day I watched a movie while playing with my daughter in the play room. It can fix anything. I wish I could share my list...although we have movies on there from years and years ago. It just keeps growing! But I'm grabbing some paper and jotting down all these suggestions...I love new ideas! Off the top of my head...thoroughly enjoyed watching the first 3 seasons of Alias, Lars and the Real Girl, and found the movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button both intriguing, disturbing, and fascinating.
my favorite japanese movie is tampopo
I recommend all seasons of 24 if you haven't seen them yet... it's really addicting, so be careful when you start them. I love a lot of old movies: "How to Marry a Millionaire" with Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable-- a classic comedy, "Roman Holiday," "Calamity Jane" (old musical with Doris Day), "Casablanca", "My Fair Lady", etc. I'm also a fan of "Thoroughly Modern Millie" (a 60's musical with Julie Andrews- very madcap, quirky humor, not for everyone, but one of my faves). "The Gods Must Be Crazy" if you want some really slapstick comedy. "The Mission" if you want a beautifully done drama that will make you think and make you cry. "The Scarlet Pimpernel" with Jane Seymour is great in a cheese-a-riffic kind of way. I loved "Hotel Rwanda"- very moving story. I also love Hitch- which you've probably already seen. Also, someone mentioned "Manon of the Spring", which is the sequel to "Jean de Florette"- I haven't seen either but I have heard they are great. Oh, oh, oh and wait... you have to see "Cyrano de Bergerac" with Gerard Depardieu. It is in french with subtitles, but it is amazing-- and funny. There, I've blabbed long enough.
We just started Netflix too. We got all the episodes of the first season of Chuck, then a movie for the kids, and that's where ours ends too.
We don't have any TV channels and we haven't for years, so I Netflix everything that I want to see. The Office, Monk and such.
I also love period films, such as North & South (adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's book) and other like that. I like to order whatever movies I wanted to see that came out in the previous year or two. Netflix is a great source for Indie films or Foreign films or BBC stuff, if you're into that...
I just got "Philidelphia Story" today. In fact, I'm about to get old movies for a while bc I got sucked into it while browsing. Just look something up and then it brings up more ideas until your queue is ridiculously full. Old movies and documentaries rock. "Confessions of a Superhero" was interesting enough. Can't beat "Grey Gardens." Just can't. Oh, and use the instant watch option. Cubby watches "Ratatouille" and old Pink Panther cartoons all the time on the computer.
I just went through and put a lot of those suggestions in my queue. I sent you an email inviting you to see the list of movies I've seen and rated. i have 145 movies in my DVD queue and 43 in my instant watch queue. Please don't judge my watching. I have VERY low standards. But definitely check out my 4 or 5 star ratings.
Here are some recommendations (you make the call on the ratings):
Shoalin Soccer
Kung Fu Hustle
anything directed by Wes Anderson:
Bottlerocket
Rushmore (Todd and I fell in love over Rushmore and still watch it at least once a year)
The Royal Tennenbaums
The Life Acquatic
Let the Right One In (maybe too scary for you!)
BBC Oliver Twist
Frozen River
La Moustache
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day
Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Kamikaze Girls
Hamlet (Kenneth Branaugh)
The entire series of Freeks and Geeks
Mad Men
Big blue
Sliding Doors
just to name a few. Go crazy nuts!
