Greenriver Marathon

greenriver_marathon

Not a bad run for the amount of sleep we had the night before ... which was NONE. I can't believe we stayed up chatting like we were at a junior high sleepover! I've never had so much fun in all my life!

One of the first things I remember that moring was trying to fill my fuel belt bottles with water and goo. I knew I was in trouble when I couldn't focus my sleepy eyes enough on the bottles to get them filled. But a banana, yougurt and Luna bar later we were walking briskly the half mile to the starting line. I use the term "starting line" loosely. It was really just a group of really obsessed runners all going out for a long... long... long run on a Saturday morning. The river trail was beautiful, and the people we met and chatted with were fun and interesting. Remember Arthur and his marathon-running dog named Shari? Ah, good times.

I was surprised to feel as awake as I did. I guess you can't get too sleepy with your heart rate up that high. We were well-equipped with our printed-out map of the course (with written directions), mp3 players, fuel belts, goo, water, $20 (you know... just in case), some ibuprofen, Icy-Hot for the legs, and of course a cell phone. You'd think we were toting a little carry-on luggage wheely deal thingy, but no. Didn't we look cute?

This must have been taken at the beginning ... we're still smiling and my feet are coming up off the ground. Around mile 11 or so my legs started to rebel: "We're going back to sleep!" they kept saying. But I forced them to keep following M&M. She was on fire.

So, the directions were a bit sketchy at a few junctures. Is that a word? Junctions? We spent several extra minutes and approximately 1.2 extra miles over the rest of the race making sure we would find our way to the finish line. That means we got lost. But somehow it was fun even then! Maybe it was sleepless delirium. Maybe M&M and I can't help but have a good time!

Let's be honest here. I didn't feel great most of the time. But I felt tremendous joy as M&M sprinted to the top of the steepest hill and I put one foot in front of the other to try to catch up. My favorite moment was M&M watching her heartrate plummit on a downhill and her cheering and pumping her arms in the air with joy.

Mile 24 (the real mile 24, not the pretend one the guy TOLD us was mile 24) was disappointing for both of us. Asthma is asthma and there's not too much that can be done about that. To be perfectly honest, I was happy for the chance to slow down and enjoy the beautiful scenery on the shore. The course ended on a strip of beach front across the bay from Seattle and the Space Needle. Beautiful! It was fun to see our friend Sue cheering for us at the finish and to be done. I love doing this with my friend. I love that it is over now, but I look forward to being in better shape (and getting sleep) before our next marathon... whenever that may be!

So we topped off our girls' weekend in Seattle with a trip to Ikea (pictures of my completely wonderful, finally finished living room to come) and dinner at Olive Garden. Oh, and M&M got her hair cut as a definitive gesture to her husband as if to say "I am really finshed with running marathons... until my hair grows out long enough to put in a ponytail again." She was so happy and yet so painfully tired. The haircut is gorgeous! (And so is my living room... did I already mention that?) Anyway, there is a half marathon next weekend here in Portland, but Zook won't let me. WON'T LET ME. I swear I'd do it. I'm still on a roll. Or obsessed. Or something. Endorphins are addictive you know.

2 days later and I am still not awake enough to blog about the marathon. :-) Leave it to Suzie to describe it perfectly. I love that I am smiling with delirium in every picture. Thanks for a fabulous, fun weekend with a marathon thrown in. I can't wait to see your living room.(By the way, I will run Helvetia Half with you if you really want...ha ha ha...kidding Zook, I promise!)Seriously, this whole running experience with you has made for great memories. I look forward to many more. Now, I just want to sleep...

Did you expect me to actually remember the name of the dog? I told you... I'm not accountable for anything that happened that day. :)

How can I get a dose of those endorphins without all the running? Any ideas? It does look beautiful and IKEA makes any trip worth the time! I want to see how the curtains turned out!

Okay, I am back- I know I commented already. *chuckle*

Yesterday, I had a meeting on the other side of the county. Its not that far but the roads curve and go through the farming communities.

There was a bike race yesterday. And all over on these curvy beautiful hilly roads were bikes going both directions around and around up and through.

I kept thinking about you. Running up and down the road, next to the every present orange cones and drinking from the little booths and people handing cups to you as you zoom by.

I like, really love, reading about your adventures. Its like seeing a race and having an idea about what is going through the minds of the bikers/runners...

Thanks Suz.

Yeah, endorphins are addictive...kind of like SPEED! Seriously, what are you on? Don't get me wrong, you still inspire me...but now you also scare me a little. But you're still totally cool (in a scary way). I kid. You are quite amazing and you know I love you more than my luggage (even the new brown luggage with polka dots and that's a big deal).

Suzie Petunia said...

oooh - that sounds like cute luggage. No, I'm not on speed. Remember when you thought I was balemic? I'm just as much on speed as I am balemic. That means I am neither. And never have been. I don't DO speed. I've GOT speed! Oh man, I'm cracking myself up. Whew. Is it really almost 3 in the morning? ZZZzzzzz.

You two are insane! I can't believe you did another marathon on no sleep. Amazing. Do you appreciate what fantastic legs you both have in those pictures. I'm going back right now to stare again...
